Welcome to Emergence@ASU, a research group led by Prof. Sara Walker at Arizona State University! Our primary research interest is the origin of life. With our research we focus on addressing the question "What is life?" (in the spirit originally posed by the physicist Erwin Schrodinger in 1943) and also the deeply related question of "How did life emerge?". Answers to these two questions are essential for fields such as astrobiology, which seeks to address how common life is in the universe, but also for understanding ourselves and our place in the cosmos. We are most interested in whether life represents a fundamentally different kind of physical system, and thus a new frontier in physics. We focus our investigations on the concepts of information and causation (particularly between levels of organization), as the widespread use of these two concepts in biology is the most problematic aspect of life from the perspective of fundamental physics. We also have a lot of fun modeling chemical evolution, open-ended complexity and even hot spring ecosystems along the way!
