Graduate student Tucker Ely publishes paper on the possibility of life on Europa!

Emergence@ASU affiliated graduate student Tucker Ely recently co-authored a paper in the journal Astrobiology titled "Spectroscopy and Viability of Bacillus subtilis Spores after Ultraviolet Irradiation: Implications for the Detection of Potential Bacterial Life on Europa". Sara Walker named Fellow of new ASU-SFI Center for Biosocial Complex Systems

Arizona State University and the Santa Fe Institute (SFI) officially launched a research and educational collaboration to advance understanding of problems that stretch across complex biological and social systems. The new ASU-SFI Center for Biosocial Complex Systems will help scientists and policymakers alike gain a better theoretical understanding of the interconnections between these systems, and apply that knowledge to questions such as what happens to institutions, health care and human behavior as cities grow into mega-cities. Professor Walker will participate as a Faculty Fellow of the new center. More details of the center launch are found here.

Graduate Student Alyssa Adams featured on Wolfram Science!

Graduate student Alyssa Adams participated in the 2014 Wolfram Summer School where she initiated some foundational work on cellular automata, a popular class of models in computer science used for studying how complex patterns can emerge from simple rules. Her projects are primarily aimed at uncovering the principles underlying the physics of life by studying a new class of CA models developed in the Emergence@ASU group where rules are state-dependent (see e.g., http://arxiv.org/abs/1405.4070). Alyssa's bio and brief description of her summer projects are featured on the alumni site for the school.
