An essay on the connection between math and physics, titled "The Descent of Math" by Prof. Walker is entered in this years Foundational Questions in Science Institute Essay contest. In the essay, Prof. Walker proposes that are our ability to use mathematics to describe, and more importantly manipulate, the natural world may not be an oddity, but instead a natural part of the structure of reality. Emergence@ASU graduate student Cole Mathis leads a paper investigating the emergence of replication and selection dynamics as a phase transition! Read the paper here. The project is part of a collaboration with Tanmoy Bhattacharya (Los Alamos National Lab and the Sante Fe Institute) to study the dynamics of the transition from non-life to life.
