In the essay, Prof. Walker proposes that are our ability to use mathematics to describe, and more importantly manipulate, the natural world may not be an oddity, but instead a natural part of the structure of reality. Emergence@ASU graduate student Cole Mathis leads a paper investigating the emergence of replication and selection dynamics as a phase transition! Read the paper here. The project is part of a collaboration with Tanmoy Bhattacharya (Los Alamos National Lab and the Sante Fe Institute) to study the dynamics of the transition from non-life to life.
